Facebook account hacked? How to recover it (2026)

Updated November 8, 2026 · Independent guide, not affiliated with Meta · Links go to Meta's official pages

If someone took over your Facebook, Meta has an official route for it. The trick is doing the steps in the right order, from the right device.

1. Secure your email

Change the password of the email linked to Facebook and turn on 2-step verification there. Then search that inbox for Facebook messages about a changed email or password. They may include a link to secure your account.

2. Go to facebook.com/hacked

Facebook says to open facebook.com/hacked on a device you've used to log in before. Choose the option that fits and follow the screens.

3. The hacker changed your email and phone?

Use facebook.com/login/identify from a device you've used before, and choose the option for when you no longer have access to the email or phone. Facebook may then ask you to confirm your identity, for example with a photo of an ID.

4. Confirming your identity with an ID

Facebook accepts many kinds of ID, not only a passport. Take a flat, sharp photo in good light, with all four corners visible. Your name should match the profile name. Only upload an ID inside Facebook's own flow.

5. Back in? Secure everything

  • New, unique password.
  • Log out of devices you don't recognize.
  • Check your email and phone in Accounts Center.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app and save recovery codes.
  • If you manage a Page, check who has access.

A friend can help too

Facebook has a "help someone else recover their account" option. A friend can start it from their own Facebook on your behalf (it's listed on the hacked-account help page above).
