Locked out by two-factor authentication? Lost phone, SIM or codes
Two-factor authentication protects you from hackers, and it can also lock you out when you change phones. Here are the back doors Meta built for that.
1. Backup / recovery codes
When you set up two-factor, you were offered backup codes. Look in your screenshots, notes app, password manager, or a printout. Each code works once instead of the login code.

2. Approve from a device that's still logged in
An old phone, a tablet or a computer that's still logged in can often approve a new login. Check every device in the house.
3. Your authenticator app's backup
If you used an authenticator app, check whether it backed up to your account and can be restored on the new phone.
4. "Try another way"
On the code screen, look for another way to confirm it's you. Meta may offer an email code or an identity check.

Next time: set it up so this can't happen
- Use an authenticator app and turn on its backup.
- Save backup codes in two places.
- Add a security key or a second device if you can.
